The Flint River Valley Democratic Women will hold their second organizational meeting on February 27, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at the home of District Director Yvonne Sutherland. We want this to be multi-county club and hope to have members from Dooly, Macon, Sumter, Taylor and nearby counties. The address is 427 N. Dooly Street, Montezuma, Georgia. Debate Tonight

We wanted to remind you that tonight the Democratic Party of Georgia is hosting the first televised Gubernatorial Debate of the 2010 primary election.It will be held in Athens at the PJ Auditorium, located in the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia. Some last minute seats may be available, but you must arrive no later than 6:30 PM to be seated, and the debate begins at 7:00 PM.For those of you who can't be in Athens tonight, it will be aired live on WNEG-TV (Athens), WGCL-TV (Atlanta) and WALB-TV (Albany). It will air on WRDW-TV (Augusta) at noon on Saturday. WMAZ-TV (Macon) will air it online tonight, as well as on Saturday at 7:00 PM. Among those attending the first meeting of the Flint River Valley Democratic Women’s Club at Rosati’s Depot in Marshallville on Saturday morning were: seated, from left: Mildred Carter, Maryjane Crook, Spring Rosati and Diana Dunton; standing: Annie Keen, Houston County Democratic Party Chair Fenika Miller, Sally McIntosh, Candidate for Ga. Dept. of Insurance Mary Squires, District 2 GFDW Director Yvonne Sutherland, GFDW President Kristina Simms, and visitor Keith McCants who operates the blog, "Peanut Politics."

Chairing the meeting was Yvonne Sutherland of Montezuma, who is a Director of District 2 of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women. Also there to support the new organization were Fenika Miller, Houston County Democratic Chair, and Kristina Simms, President of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women.

The next meeting of the group will be at the home of Yvonne Sutherland and her husband, Sid Moore, 427 No. Dooly Street, Montezuma, on Feb. 26 at 10:00 a.m. All interested parties are welcome.

The speaker at Saturday’s meeting was Mary Squires, Democratic candidate for Georgia Commissioner of Insurance, the position which will be vacated by Republican John Oxendine, who is now a candidate for governor. The Commissioner of Insurance also serves as Safety and Fire Commissioner.

Squires, who is currently unopposed in the Democratic Primary to be held in July, gave a lively, informal talk about her platform and background. She said of the post she is seeking, "There is not one life untouched by this department , and it is one the state’s highest collectors of revenues." She suggested at several points that Oxendine, rather than protecting consumers, had "shaken down" insurance companies, and said that if she is elected, insurance companies not paying legitimate claims will be swiftly fined and even denied the option of doing business in Georgia if they persist in not paying claims.

Squires spoke about her experience as a U.S. National Guard and as a Chemical Warfare specialist, her combining family responsibilities with work, and her first run for the Georgia General Assembly in 1998 when she went door to door to win a House seat in a largely Republican District. She also served in the Georgia Senate, putting her efforts into health benefits, insurance and improvements in the juvenile justice system.

Most recently she has been Executive Director of the Georgia Society of Professional Benefit Administrators, Inc., a self-insured health care trade association and is Executive Director of the Georgia Society of Professional Benefit Administrators, Inc. She and her husband Tom West of Augusta currently live in Atlanta. They have four children.

Reminder: Our first organizational meeting is this coming Saturday at 10:00 a.m in Rosati’s Depot Café Locomotive in Marshallville. In addition to hearing from Mary Squires, Democratic Candidate for Insurance Commissioner, we will have some important guests including Tina Simms, President of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women, Fenika Miller, Chair of the Houston County Democratic Committee, and Charlotte Perkins, retired journalist. 2010 will be a challenging year. Don’t miss being part of our grassroots effort to better our world.

Micasa is operated in connection with the Phoenix Center for Behavioral Care. Breakfast will be served in the Cafe Locomotive located inside the Depot. A member of one of our sister clubs (DeKalb County) is helping a charity collect (new)cotton panties for Haitian girls who have no underwear. Imagine being so poor that you cannot afford to buy underwear for your daughters. Those kids are often seen sitting bare-bottomed on the dirt. Makes me sad just thinking about it. Tina Simms has pledged to help collect panties, which will be sent to Haiti. If you want to contribute to this project, please bring a package of panties, any size from little kids up to teens, to the Macon County Chapter of MGDWC meeting on June 27. I will be responsible for getting them to Tina. You can get packages of panties that are good quality and cheap at Family Dollar or Fred's.

Great Speech by General Poythress

We had a great meeting on May 23rd. Gubernatorial candidate David Poythress gave an inspiring talk regarding his vision for Georgia’s future. Montezuma Downtown Development Director, Camille Bielby, who has known the general and his wife for a long time introduced our speaker. We were honored to have several visitors at the meeting, including Marshallville City Councilman Ronnie Buckner, Mary Haigler of Oglethorpe, Taylor County Commissioner Patty James, Attorney Sid Moore, Charlotte Perkins, Staff Writer for the Houston Home Journal, and Tina Simms, newly elected President of the Georgia Federation of Democratic Women.

Change of Plans - Carter Museum is Closed

The Carter Museum is closed for extensive renovations so the May 16 trip has been changed. The MGDWC will instead visit Warm Springs, Georgia. Spring Rosati will pick up the Houston County Group at the Galleria Mall in Warner Robins. A separate group will leave from Macon County. Maryjane Crook and Diana Dunten will drive the Macon County group. The two groups will meet in Warm Springs.

Georgia Boyd Speaks to the Democratic Women

Ms. Georgia Boyd of the Literacy Council, spoke to the Macon County Democratic Women about the problems of a low literacy level can affect community, region, and nation.She was accompanied to the meeting by Ms. Sally McIntosh, adult literacy instructor.Ms. Boyd's presentation stimulated lively discussion and offers of volunteer help.Bob Fear greeted the group on behalf of the Macon County Democratic Committee. His topic was the need for people to get active and get involved. Ms. Kristina Simms,president-elect of GFDW, told the group about the current growth of GFDW chapters and the need for Democrats to activate the base and put a Democrat back in the state house. The meeting was held at Rosati's Depot in Marshallville GA. Ms. Spring Rosati, a member of the Macon County Democratic Women, owns and operates the renoved depot as a restaurant and gift shop. She announced the "First Annual Peach Pig Fest" to be held in Marshallville Oct. 9-10. For info: (478)967-2928. Macon County Democratic Women’s Club held the first Meeting on February 28 at Rosati’s Depot in Marshallville. Breakfast was catered by the Café Locomotive which is located inside the Depot. The women discussed ideas for service-oriented projects and shared suggestions about several areas of need in the Macon County Community.
